Headshot or Head Shot?!

Headshot or Head Shot?!

Why hire a professional?

You can settle for a nice picture of your face (head shot) or you can opt for a professional portrait that will get you booked (aka headshot). Agents and casting directors sort through tons of bland photos, and they take less than a second to decide whether they want to give you a chance. You need shots that stand out from the crowd, while also staying true to you. You need a headshot that’s legit.

First off, your headshot needs to look like you (on your best day). Nothing irks a Hollywood decision maker more than an actor who comes in the audition room looking nothing like their picture. Also on shoot day opt to keep any makeup natural and flattering. Lastly, keep photoshopping to a minimum.

You need to be the focus of the picture. A good photographer will achieve this with aesthetics, composition, and experience. It also helps to limit distractions e.g. busy patterns, big jewelry, competing backgrounds, etc  Leave the props at home.

Your headshot needs to tell a story. This is how a casting director will decide if you are right for a specific part. So KNOW YOUR TYPE. Before you shoot take the time to determine what parts you could be realistically cast as. What does your look and personality give off? Are you the sweet boy next door or heartbreaker bad boy? Tough detective or struggling mom? Dress accordingly. Also exude that character when you take your headshot.

The eyes are the window to the soul. They have the potential to draw in a viewer. Ever heard of the Mona Lisa? A good headshot photographer will use lighting to ensure your eyes pop. But a great photographer will ensure the actor is at ease so that anxiety doesn’t cloud the eyes. They will also assist you in emanating genuine emotion; that real emotion will make your headshot captivating.
